The dam, located on the Holston and French Broad rivers that make up the Tennessee River, was built during World War II to generate hydropower for flood control. Cherokee Lake is named after the Great Indian Warpath used by the Cherokee Indians.
Following Daniel Boone, the warpath passed through the basin, which is now filled with the reservoir. The reservoir was created at the beginning of the 20th century by the construction of a dam at the junction of two rivers.
Cherokee Lake is managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which operates several recreational facilities around the lake, including a beach, a jetty and a campground. TVA also regulates water levels, which fluctuate up to 27 feet per year, as well as the flow of water from the river to the reservoir.
Beginners and experienced anglers will find plenty of fish at Cherokee Lake, including black bass and suckers. Trout, white perch, bluefish, yellowbait, redfish and whitefish as well as a variety of other species are fished in the lake.
TVA has been providing oxygen to Cherokee Lake for the past 20 years to support fish stocks, as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) Great Smoky Mountains Power Plant.
Several full-service marinas offer boaters and anglers services, including boat rental and bait services. Fishing tournaments are held on the lake all year round, as well as a variety of other events such as fishing tournaments, boat races, kayaking and other activities.
On the shores of Cherokee Lake, Panther Creek State Park offers a variety of hiking, horseback riding, fishing, kayaking and other activities. The park offers a wide range of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, canoeing, boating, mountain biking and horseback riding. Visitors can see the Great Smoky Mountains, the Tennessee River and the Appalachian Trail. About 45 minutes south of Cherokee Lake rounds off the outdoor adventure The most visited park in the country is the Cherokee National Wildlife Refuge. With its many bays and islands to explore, it is well sailed, scenic and a great place to camp, hike and fish.
The area is also home to one of the most famous bluegrass musicians of all time, the Carter Family. Clinch Mountain was immortalized by the Carter Family in their song "The Old Man and the Mountain" from their album Bluegrass Country. Looking at the Clinches Mountain Overlook, it is easy to see why the song was written and what constitutes a picture of a beautiful area around the lake.
