6 Best Fly Fishing Kits

Are you interested in Fly Fishing? This sport can feel daunting at first, especially if you’re a beginner. As spring rolls around and summer is looming closer, you’ll need to prepare a fly fishing kit to maximize all of the new fish you’ll be catching.

When it comes to fly fishing, we use a lightweight artificial fly to catch these fish. These flies resemble flies, baitfish, and other invertebrates that they usually eat. These flies work in both fresh and saltwater. As a beginner, you’ll need a lot of flies to work with. And more importantly, it’s crucial to have an assortment of flies that range from wet to dry flies.

In traditional methods of fishing, the bait is attached to the line, and you’ll notice the lure is the heaviest part. When it comes to fly fishing, the fly used at the end of the line is the lightest part, and the line is where the weight lies.

With fly fishing, the key is using flies that imitate a real insect to outsmart the fish into biting. Whether you’re targeting bass, steelheads, panfish, or trouts, having the right flies will catch the attention of your prey.

To simulate a life-like resemblance to a real fly from a natural habitat, actual materials are used, such as feathers from birds, furs, and hairs from animals such as deer, elk, moose, and beavers, tungsten beads, and other ribbing materials.

In this review, we’ve saved you all the grunt work of researching and confusing yourself with trying to find the right type of fly fishing kits. You’ll need a wide array of flies with excellent durability and life patterns to be successful in your fly fishing endeavors. We’ll break down the absolute best fly fishing kits, including pros and cons, as well as a summary of it’s best features. This way, you can hit the ground running this spring!

Our Take

If you’re looking for quality flies to handle rigorous fishing, these flies are nicely tied and made. The reason is that their manufacturers have coated the knows with clear epoxy to avoid them falling apart. What makes this product so amazing is it helps beginners quickly get started with fly fishing. Typically you’ll need to go to a fly shop to see what they recommend. Some fly shops charge $3 per fly, while with this assortment, you can get a fly for as little as 36 cents each. With Bassdash, have been carefully selected and categorized, so even a beginner can know which flies work best in any given situation.

From our perspective, these flies capture a very realistic look and feel of a fly. As mentioned above, flies will increase your odds of catching more fish due to how much more attention they garner. For example, this is a popular choice to pass to your child who may be interested in learning fly fishing as well.

Our Take

If you’re a beginner looking to improve on your fly fishing skills, these are excellent for starters. If you are more seasoned, this kit is excellent for experimenting with a variety of fishing lures. Since most flies at the lure shop cost roughly $9 for three or $15 for 5, you don’t want to be wasting flies, especially when starting. For those of you looking to catch larger trout, and the more robust high pressured fish, there are a variety of trusted patterns that’ll usually capture their attention. After testing these flies with a spinner, we were able to get bites right away. The box is incredibly sturdy with a seal, so I never have to worry if the flies will ruin.

When it comes to any flies, you want to ensure they are handmade. Having a great deal of attention to each fly means they aren't mass-produced to look like a toy. Each should look and feel authentic. This only increases your chances of a fish biting, which is why we love the craftsmanship of their flies kit.

One downside that we would like to see improved from this flies kit is the overall lifespan of these flies. They can fall apart or wear down if used too many times. Still, with what you’re paying for, you get to try out all sorts of patterns and styles of flies to seeing which works best for your climate and region.

What separates this flies assortment kit from others is its real-life like patterns on each fly. The patterns demonstrate vibrant and vivid colors. They’re also very lightweight, which captures the attention of trout. One pro tip we’ve found to make these flies last longer through 20 fish is to take a toothpick and put a tiny dab of superglue on the heads.

With this product, it’s only 3.84 ounces, so the flies are extremely small and light. But the advantage is that they float in the water much longer than flies that are made heavier. We also love how quick hook snaps are included. These hook snaps allow you to change flies without having to retie. The snap hook is tied directly to the end of your line, while the eye of the fly is slide over the snap hook. This makes switching and trying flies much easier during your fishing sessions. Our Take

When it comes to flies assortment kits, you really want to look for real life patterns. We love how this assortment specifically makes extremely realistic flies. As someone who’s been fishing for years I can’t tell you how many terrible fake flies I’ve tried. This product has conveniently labeled it’s flies to show you which patterns each one is and it tells you the corresponding hook. As a beginner, you need to use the correct hook in order to catch flies. If you’re still practicing your angular fly fishing skills, we think this is the kit for you. Since it’s very beginner friendly, this also makes a wonderful gift for your friends. Face it, fishing isn’t fun by yourself. You want to share your fly fishing adventures with friends. Why not give them a box of assorted flies to start?

Another aspect we love is the variety of wet flies this box offers. Though, we’d like to see dry flies and other assortments included, it is very beneficial for the specific types of fish listed above. Personally I would like to see the manufacturers improve on the quality of the box. Typically you want to have a sturdy double sided box with a magnetic or silicone seal. This will protect flies from being damaged and ensure you can use these flies for a long time. Comparatively, the current box kind of feels like just a petri dish.

The hooks range from sizes #8, #10, #12, #14 #16 and #18.

Pros

  • Incredible variety of patterns and volume of flies
  • Durable aluminum box to conveniently hold flies
  • Prepackaged and labeled for ease of use
  • Well made, life-like patterns

Cons

  • Slot holes and flies are small, may be difficult for folks with big hands

Our Take

As someone who’s tried flies from fly shops as well as other fly boxes, this one is definitely a breath of fresh air. The first thing we noticed is that the flies are packed separately than the box. It comes in 2 plastic containers - 1 dry and 1 with nymphs. You’ll need to pack the flies inside the box when you go on your fishing trips. We’ve tested this in North American waters and trout bite like crazy on this.

One thing we love about this kit compared to others is it’s in depth variety of flies. Typically, the pattern selection in boxes is quite meek, but this box has 44 different patterns! Pretty much any possible scenario you’re in, these flies should work. Whether you’re in the coastal salt waters, high altitude freshwater lakes or forest streams, you will be ready for your trip!

One thing you should know if the flies are small, so you’ll need to be careful not to squish or accidentally damage the flies. That could affect the effectiveness when trying to catch fresh trout. That’s why it’s useful that the box is made of aluminum to protect any potential damage.

Our final take is that this box is incredibly beginner friendly. Most “cheap” flies assortments only include a few flies that work. We’ve found this to not be the case. It’s a great resource to have if you’re a beginner and want to explore different types of flies without having to spend a fortune at a fly shop.
