About Delavan Lake

One of Wisconsin's most popular lakes is Delavan Lake in the southern savanna, which has a glorious history. In the 19th century, before the introduction of the automobile, the lake was a popular summer bathing place, making travel easy and comfortable.

The 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago was held in accordance with local tradition, and to some extent of this flourishing past, the lakeside was home to the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most famous architects in the world. Wright designed two boathouses on the lake, but his design know-how left nothing to be desired, as there is no boathouse in the form of a pagoda on this lake.

At the other end of the scale, the village of Delavan served as a winter shelter for a total of 26 circuses over many years. About 70 members of this circus colony are buried in Spring Grove and St. Andrew Cemeteries, and rumors abound that deceased elephants were buried at Delvan Lake during this time. P.T. Barnum was born in Delavan in 1871 as the son of W.S. Coup, who was also the first to stage a big circus and introduce the second and third circus ring to the show.

Despite its history, Delavan Lake is now associated with sailing and water sports, and the heavily developed lake has been reduced to many small holiday homes, but with a bit of luck, residential properties are still available at reasonable prices.

Apartments are always available for rent and as a neighbour of Lake Geneva, the sailing culture of Lake Delvan has grown and lives on.

Several regattas are held on Delavan Lake each summer, and there is a local yacht club and enthusiastic sailing teams travel to competitions in the United States to compete. The regatta season is in full swing during the spring, summer and fall months and has become a major attraction for visitors to Delvan Lake.

Not only on the Delavan Lake sailing takes place, the association also gives courses on the safety of sailing and boating.

In winter ice fishing is the main activity, with regular fishing competitions and tournaments. A few years ago, two blue Walliye hybrids were caught fishing, and a few months ago fishing was also a popular activity, where we caught a large number of blue fish, as well as a few whitefish and even a redfish.

There is a public boat ramp on the northeast shore of the 50 highway, and a boat parking lot at the northern end of the lake. The lake has suffered from severe eutrophism (weeds and algae blooms) since the 1940s, but Lake Delavan is one of those lakes where the problems can be solved with the right management and use of natural resources.

The 2,072-hectare lake has undergone some changes and is now a clean, pleasant water for living and playing. A key feature of these clean-up operations has been the use of natural resources, such as wetlands, waterfalls, ponds, lakes and streams.

There are concerts and performing arts, and there are a variety of activities for the year - year-round residents who want something different. No summer visitor would want to miss the Venetian Sea Festival in summer. Due to its proximity to Lake Geneva, there are numerous activities and festivals taking place nearby.

For a change from the summer, there are several trotting races on the Elkhorn fairground and also a triathlon, which attracts many visitors every year.

Hiking, biking and snowmobiling trails can be found around Delavan Lake, and the Walworth County Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Delvan Lake is located in the northern part of the town of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, north of Walwhorn. It is accessible by boat from Lake Superior State Park and from lakes further north, as well as from Lake Michigan.

It is the perfect place for a weekend in the summer to enjoy the water and the surrounding area, and it is a great destination for camping, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and snowmobiling.
