It is thought that an underwater snake called Memphis, a large, menacing presence, is a distinct possibility now that the waves are breaking. I have no documented sightings, but I think it is a possibility, and I am sure that all the fish that light up the surface and catch their scales in the bright Quebec sun before they move to safety have been banished. The 75-mile stretch from Vermont to Quebec stretches the entire length of Lake Memphis. Visitors snap up holiday homes all year round, local seaside resorts visit the lake and some have even had sightings documented.

The large lake, also known as Lac Memphis, which means "beautiful water" in Abenaki, was first inhabited by the Indian community of St. Francis. In the late 17th century, European settlers gradually took over, and although it is still a relatively remote place to visit, it has become an upscale resort.

There are three active dams on the Clyde River, two of which are owned by private companies. The lake is fed by the Barton, Black and Clyde rivers that flow into the lake, and the dams were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the Great Lakes Dam Project, Canada's largest dam project.

Lake Memphis Magog, nestled among countless mountains, attracts photographers who capture the bright autumn leaves and young snowboarders who make their way through the mountains into winter. The water stretches for long distances and miles of hiking trails include the Great Lakes Trail, the oldest long-distance trail in the United States, which consists of 272 rugged miles.

Snowboarders hoping for fresh powder to dig their boards, and skiers who want to race up the mountain side by side with their poles, can choose from the ski resorts near the lake. Those who settle down at depths as deep as 350 feet can look forward to a selection of fish, including trout and salmon, but there are other species that can attract patient anglers.

If the thought of the lake's underwater snakes is not enough to pump your heart, you can grab two oars and a kayak to paddle to one of the many islands in the middle of the lake or to the former historic site of a jagged opening that once provided a haven for smugglers. The pleasures of Memphis Lake are not always hidden in coves, but include off-shore diving, sunbathing on the shore, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and more. Grab a bite to eat and invent your own pirate story by discovering washed-up jewelry and other treasures from the past, as well as a treasure trove of historical artifacts.

Glide in a sailboat along one of the many scenic trails on Memphis Lake, such as the Great Smoky Mountains Trail or the Blue Ridge Trail.

Stroll downtown on the Newport Promenade, visit an alpaca or moose farm or go golf before retiring to the city for candlelit dinner. Whichever side of the border you are on, you can explore the many parks, museums and other attractions in the Memphis area, such as Tennessee Riverfront Park.

Not far from Quebec City is Magog National Park, which offers hiking, cycling, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and other activities for children and adults. Lake Stukely and Lake Fraser attract swimmers and boaters, while more intense climbers, snowshoers and hikers escape the crowds in autumn and winter. Take a rest at one of the lakes in the park and look out for the swimmers who take part in events such as exhibitions and trapeze shows. Watch the moose herd in their natural habitat and discover the white, tail-shaped deer.
