About Gunnison Reservoir

Gunnison Reservoir is, like most lakes in Utah, an artificial lake, but unlike most lakes in Utah, it is not. The reservoir, also known as Sugar Child Pond, was created after a seizure in the San Pitch River.

If you have never been there, you should know that it is a rather dry environment and that the few rivers that flow through the landscape tend to evaporate strongly. The pioneers in the area needed water to feed their crops and livestock, and so they began to dam the local rivers early on.

Because the area is also mountainous, the annual thaw in spring tends to wash out these primitive dams. The current dam at Gunnison Reservoir was built in 1889 and holds the lake to this day.

In particularly dry years, the water can disappear completely, so if you are in a good area during the day, beg this large reservoir. If you are going on holiday, you should check the weather, but if it is a good day to be in the area, it is good to go there.

The coast of Gunnison Reservoir is almost entirely privately owned, and there are no restrictions on public use. There is no public access to the water, only private access, so locals do not use it, but there is a small number of private boats that can be used in the area.

Although there are many other reservoirs nearby, most people say they could see three or more boats at once at Gunnison Reservoir. Fishing is particularly good most of the year, but it is allowed from April to October. Catfish, bluefish and perch (or "perch") are easy to catch, although carp seem to be the most abundant fish in the lake.

The good news is that there is no one to bother you, and if you want to go water skiing, there is no way to compete against one, which is also better news.

Gunnison Reservoir is located in the Sanpete district, and the water levels are remarkably high, which is a reference point. Other reservoirs in the region are lower than normal, but other lakes are more popular with locals because they are larger and deeper than Gunnison Reservoir. Utah's other two major lakes, Salt Lake City and Cedar City, are relatively close and are both large and deep, covering a total area of about 2,000 acres.

The nearby town of Sterling has 240 inhabitants and is the only town the size of Gunnison Reservoir. The district's tourism website lists other destinations, including a list of restaurants, hotels and other attractions in the Sanpete district, as well as a map of the area.

If you're lucky enough to be in town, don't blink, otherwise you could get away before the start. So make a stop or two at Gunnison Reservoir and make sure you get your supplies at least at one of the local grocery stores or gas stations. Make sure you get them all before you even start - otherwise you might find it an escape from you.

This is a nice quiet place to go fishing and I would be a great place to bring my family - you don't have to worry about so many people having so much fun that they can't track everything down. It is a good place for you to enjoy with your kids so you can have fun and not have the stress of worrying about Gunnison Reservoir.
