About Lake Fork

Birch Creek and Big Caney Creek also flow into Lake Fork, and water levels typically fluctuate between two and four feet per year. The Sabine River Authority completed the Lake Fork Project in the late 1990s and dammed a 2.2 million cubic meter reservoir for municipal, industrial, water supply and recreation. Lake Fork, also known as Lakefork Reservoir, covers an area of about 3,000 square kilometers and borders the Birch Creek, Big Bancroft Creek (also in Texas) and the Big Dixie River.

Lake Fork has an excellent fish habitat and has been recognized as one of the most popular fishing destinations in the United States, with a national record for the largest perch ever caught. The national record is set at Lake Fork Reservoir for perch caught in January 1992. This surpasses the previous record of 17-67 pounds, also caught on Lake Fork in November 1986. Nationwide, Lakefork has more than 1,000 fish species, most of them in Texas, and borders Big Bancroft Creek, Big Caney Creek and Big Dixie Creek.

Mid-February to April is the best month for daytime perch fishing, but the hot summer months require night fishing. Perch are not the only attraction for anglers; fork fishermen catch catches at depths up to 70 feet, with a maximum depth of 50 feet and a depth of 70 feet.

Perch and disc fishing is subject to specific rules in addition to national regulations. In December, January and February, the minimum length of crappie is 24 inches (7.5 inches) or less, with a maximum of 30 inches. Large mouth perch is the most common fish species in Fork Lake and the largest fish in the lake. Only 1% of fish, which can be 24 inches or more, can be harvested at any time of the year, except in the summer months.

Caught cappie must be kept and culls are not allowed, but culls are not allowed. Every two months the cappies are subject to the same rules as perch and slice fishing in Fork Lake. A day pass costs $25 for a combination of black and white or $20 for black, white and red, with a limit of $5 per person.

The Sabine River Authority (SBA) operates the boat ramp at Fork Lake, the largest lake in Texas and the second largest in the United States. The boat's starting point is on the west side of the river, south of Lake Fork, at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Highway 154. The S BA's boat ramps on Highway 154 are located near the theme park, which includes a water park with a pool, water slides and other attractions for children.

Maps and information are available on the Sabine River Authority website and on the SBA Facebook page. This includes information about the Fork Lake boat ramp, the water park and other attractions in the area.

The Lake Fork region is bordered by the Sabine River, the Brazos River and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the Texas River. The area is also home to many species of birds that were once considered extinct, such as birds of prey, bats, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.

When boating, one should look for rubble and stumps in the shallow water near the coast; there, big fish like to hide. Kayaking and canoeing are becoming increasingly popular in Lake Fork, and shallow-hull canoes can bring you closer to the shores and closer to the big fish.

There is no better time to see the wildlife in Lake Fork than the summer months, and you can expect a wide variety of bird species, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds of prey and other wildlife.
