About Sam Rayburn Reservoir

The Sam Rayburn Reservoir, affectionately known as "Big Sam" and formerly known as McGee Bend Reservation, is the largest lake in Texas. The reservoir is 15 miles north of Jasper and stretches 79 miles, and there is enough water to cover the entire state of Texas, as well as parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and South Dakota.

The Sam Rayburn Reservoir was created by the US Army Corps of Engineers to control the flooding of the Angelina River, generate hydropower and provide water for community, industrial, agricultural and recreational use. Construction of the dam began in 1956 and seizure began in 1965, according to the Texas Department of Natural Resources.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir is 179 feet above sea level, although the highest elevation in the lake's history was 175 feet. In 1966, the reservoir filled to 164 feet, but sea levels rarely drop below 156 feet. The height difference has contributed to a decline in the water level of the Angelina River, a major water source for the state of Texas.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir has earned a reputation as one of the best fishing areas in the state of Texas and the nation. The deep, flooded forests, deep water and high altitude of the lake offer a first-class fishing area.

Catfish, hybrid bass and cappie fish are also excellent, and Sam Rayburn Reservoir is touted as one of the leading perches in southern fishing. SamRayburn Reservoir is home to over 300 fishing tournaments, including the largest fishing tournament in North America, the Texas Perch Fishing Tournament and many other events.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir is a lake characterised by strong commercial development, but its breathtaking beauty is not the size that impresses people the most.

Surrounded by lush, rolling pine forests, Lake Sam Rayburn offers a rural and tranquil landscape, but is also home to a number of endangered species, including the Great Blue Egret and Texas Black Bear. Around the lake there are several marinas and the nearby towns offer all the amenities most people want. Along the coast, 560 miles from the reservoir, is a well-maintained access area, including parks and private concessions.

Cabins and houses are located along the coast, and boat ramps are available in the area, but private boat moorings are not allowed. It is a good idea to visit campsites such as Sam Rayburn Campground and Camping and Recreation Center. Use the ramps and behave in and around the recreation area and you will not cause any problems.
