The cave was formed thousands of years ago when the water level in the ground began to drop. When this downward movement occurred, water began to dissolve in the limestone and the downward movement continued until a large underground stream was cut through the solid rock. It was this unusual combination of solvents and cut water that made Longhorn Cavern one of the oldest caves in Texas and possibly the United States.
