About Dale Hollow Lake
Dale Hollow Lake, which straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee border, is an artificial lake created by the damming of the Obey and Cumberland rivers. The US Army Corps of Engineers took over the project to ensure flood protection for the area, and decades later hydroelectric generators were added to power the surrounding landscape. The Dale Hollow Dam, named after the state's oldest artificial lakes, was the first such project in Kentucky to be approved in 1938.
Dale Hollow Reservoir is named after the land that became known as Willow Grove in the early 19th century. When the city was flooded in 1942, everything was buried under the lake, earning it the nickname "the city that drowned."
Since then, the lake has become a recreational mecca in Kentucky, and water lovers have taken part in fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, canoeing and other recreational activities at Dale Hollow.
The average depth is about 50 feet, and the average summer pool is 651 feet above sea level. The winter basins are 632 feet below sea level, but there is an original river channel and dam at the bottom of the lake at a depth of about 1,000 feet.
The fishing season at Dale Hollow lasts 365 days a year, but if you want to try a different way of fishing, this is it. The fish seem to be looking for a line to bite on and it is a dream for any angler. Other species that reproduce here are bluefin tuna, redfish, whale, pike, perch, trout, whitefish and other species.
Underwater spear fishing is limited to hand-held mechanically powered spears and all other fishing at Dale Hollow Lake and the rest of the lake require a fishing license.
