About South Holston Lake
South Holston Lake is an exceptional place for fishing and boating, created by the SouthHolston Dam. It is a Tennessee Valley Authority project and was created as a result of the construction of a new dam on the Tennessee River in the early 1950s.
Construction of the dam began in 1942 but was halted as other TVA projects were accelerated and energy diverted to other war efforts. Construction resumed in 1947, and the dam was completed in 1950, creating enough water to support the water ecology of more than 1.5 million people in South Holston County, Tennessee.
South Holston Lake is located in northeastern Tennessee and stretches 15 miles in Virginia, and the water level of the lake is stored as flood water. TVA built a weir at the dam to supply fish stocks with oxygen when they do not generate electricity.
South Holston Lake fishing is unusual for perch, and several major fishing tournaments have been held in the past, including the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing Tournament.
The relatively undeveloped coast is good for coastal fishing, and locals say the perch rises when the dogwood blooms. Fishermen will find it difficult to move along the South Fork Holston River, but not as difficult as other lakes in the area.
Playing on South Holston Lake is popular with boaters because of its 10,000 acres of water, including 1,600 in Virginia. The lake has an average depth of 1.8 meters and a top speed of 30 miles per hour. Nearby is North Carolina State Park, a popular destination for kayaking, canoeing and other recreational activities.
The Cherokee National Forest is the largest public land in Tennessee, with 640,000 acres and borders the US Army Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service. In 1936, President Roosevelt inaugurated the Civilian Conservation Corps, which revitalized much of the country by creating more than 1.5 million acres of public land.
There are hiking trails, horse riding trails and wildlife watching, and there is a wide selection of hiking trails, bike paths, hiking trails, horse riding and wildlife watching. Cherokee National Forest has a number of hiking trails, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Appalachian Trail.
Bristol, TN (VA) was founded in the mid-19th century, and South Holston crosses Lake Virginia (Tennessee). Bristol is the closest city to the lake and has a population of around 2,000.
In 1881, Main Street along the Virginia-Tennessee state line was inaugurated. In 1884, Tennessee ceded land to Virginia to form the middle state lines, and in 1891, Tennessee annexed it again, making South Holston the first national park in the United States.
