About Fort Gibson Lake

Fort Gibson is a historic site on the shores of Lake Gibson in Oklahoma, USA, and was important for many military expeditions. It was a place of negotiation, interaction and confrontation with the Indians and served the troops during the Civil War and reconstruction.

Lake Fort Gibson is nestled in the hills of the wooded Green Country of Oklahoma and is a vast lake covering an area of 2.2 million square kilometers. Lake Fort Gibbins is huge and was created during the Civil War as part of the construction of a new military base by the Corps of Engineers. The lake was named after the fortress that christened the new water "Fort Gibson Lake."

In 1942, the US Army Corps of Engineers designed and built the lake as a multipurpose water project. The project was interrupted during World War II and completed in 1943 with the construction of a new military base at Fort Gibbins, Oklahoma.

Fort Gibson Dam is a great place to see wintering birds such as seagulls, waders, eagles and others nesting in the lake, waiting for the water to drain and bring a rush of fish. There are wooded hills that bloom in spring and go up in flames in autumn, and an eagle clock is kept on two weekends in January.

A variety of activities at Lake Fort Gibson are supported by the Oklahoma Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oklahoma State Parks and the City of Oklahoma City. The boat ramp is illuminated with City of Oklahoma lights, as well as the state park system and local businesses.
