About Grand Lake-St Marys

Grand Lake St. Marys is a rare lake, and three lighthouses adorn the shores of the lake. Northwood Lighthouse on the North Bank was built in 1923 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. A sailboat glides in front of a lighthouse, the sails blow in the wind, it is one of those rare scenes that take place on inland lakes.

The lake in northwest Ohio stretches for nine miles and offers plenty of water for boating, and fishing is exceptional all year round. The lighthouses at Grand Lake are not the only reason to go out on the water, fishing and swimming are exceptional, but you can only see it from the boat.

Grand Lake St. Marys was created as a reservoir for the Miami and Erie canals, and several reservoirs were used to keep the water level stable at five feet. Known as Canal Supply Lake, it is one of several lakes in the Erie Basin that are used to keep the lake stable over five metres.

Grand Lake St. Marys is a shallow lake and is still the largest inland lake in Ohio. Construction of Grand Lake began in 1837 and was completed in 1845; at the time of its completion, it was the largest artificial reservoir in the world.

The 12,900 acres span parts of Auglaize and Mercer counties, and part of the 74-mile coastline around the lake is the Great Lakes National Park, the largest national park in the United States. Grand Lake is a tributary of Coldwater Creek and its outflow is bounded by Beaver Creek.

Founded in 1949, it is one of the oldest parks in Ohio and is home to Great Lakes National Park, the largest national park in the United States, as well as several other national parks.

Campsites, RV parks and cabins include Grand Lake St. Mary's RV Park and RV Park and Great Lakes RV Park. The park offers a variety of camping options, from campsites to campers, camping sites, parks and cottages.

Several breeding pairs of bald eagles have settled in this refuge, as have Canada geese, ducks and other birds of prey. Grand Lake St. Mary's National Wildlife Refuge provides a resting place for Great Lakes crested gulls, Canada geese and many other species.

During hunting season, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (DNR) distributes a lot of duck blinds along the lakeside.

Just one mile from State Park, Grand Lake St. Mary's National Wildlife Refuge offers hiking opportunities across the state.

In the past, Grand Lake St. Mary's was home to a whale population and there are reports of unusual yellowfish fishing in winter. The fish brood in St. Mary is located on the eastern shore of the lake, and fishermen can participate in several fishing tournaments held at GrandLake throughout the year.

It produces suckers, channel catfish and perch that are stored in lakes across the state and a variety of other species.

The city of St. Marys has a variety of additional amenities that visitors need, including a hotel for those who wish to extend their stay. State Park offers a number of public facilities where guests can retreat.

The Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta is dedicated to Armstrong, the son of Ohio who was the first man to walk on the moon. The museum will awaken the inner space explorer and include an interactive exhibit about Armstrong's life and career, as well as the history of space exploration in the United States and around the world. This makes it one of the largest space museums in North America and the only one in Ohio.

Due to the heavy spring rainfall, the aluminium treatment has been postponed until June, but there is great optimism for a recovery this summer. Toxic blue-green algae have returned to the lake and warning signs have been put up again.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has lifted its warning not to eat fish in Grand Lake St. Marys. The EPA has been testing water in the lake, which was pulled from the Great Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and the Ohio River last fall. To supply the algae with phosphorus, state authorities have treated them with alum and hydrogen peroxide, dredged phosphorus - a rich sediment - and created wetlands to intercept plant runoff.

Although the state authorities declared the lake safe, the recommendation against fish consumption remains. Grand Lake St. Marys is no longer under poison control, but officials have put warning signs around the lake for blue-green algae, known as cyanobacteria, which make it unsafe for swimming, boating and fishing. Fertilizer slurry flows from nearby farms into the stream that flows into the river, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Ohio's governor announced a series of measures starting in September to combat the algae outbreak, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the state's public health agency, said.
