About Falls Lake

In 1978, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of what would become Falls Lake. The Engineering Corps operates the Falls Lake Dam, located in the southeastern part of the lake, and the land around it is publicly owned. There are no residential developments around the lake, but the dam, built by the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources (N.C.D.R.), is designed to protect the water supply of the city of Charlotte and its residents.

The land is administered by the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources (N.C.D.R.), a division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

After completion of the dam, the lake began to fill in 1981 and reached its maximum capacity of 1.5 million cubic feet per second in 1983. Since then Falls Lake has been one of the largest freshwater lakes in North Carolina and the second largest in the United States. Situated at the mouth of the Falls River, the FallsLake State recreational area, north of Charlotte, N.C., is divided into two areas: Falls Rolling Hills State Park and Sandle Lake State Parks.

Boating is of course one of the most popular activities on the lake, and there are several boat launch sites offered. Forget B.W.
Wells and Holly Point, the motorhomes only have access to their boat ramps, these facilities are open to the public.

With so many bays to explore, a boat is the best way to see the entire lake, but bring your boat and sunscreen, because the emerald green shore and beautiful blue waters of the lake will never entice you back to the shore. Motorboats are not allowed in the Beaverdam area, so plan your trip accordingly.

At 121.5 feet above sea level, Falls Lake covers 12,410 hectares, but water levels can drop significantly during droughts, and the cultivation area shrinks to 2,600 hectares. It is best to consult with the state authorities before visiting the lake in dry seasons.

During the 2007 drought, sea levels dropped by almost 10 feet to 241.6 feet above sea level, and during the 2009 drought by more than 20 feet.

For those who love nature and just want to get a little rougher, Falls Lake Leisure Center offers camping in a fully wired RV park as well as primitive campsites with water and electricity to hike to your tent. Showers are available at the campsite, while there is a group campsite, which can be booked in advance and can accommodate 35 people.

Children and adults throw their rope into the waves that adorn the surface of the lake, while animals drink from the shore. If fishing is a pleasure, Falls Lake is your playground, and the crew is busy with the next catch. Whether you want to escape and enjoy it up close or hide in the natural or artificial water spaces, pack your tent and get ready for a truly enjoyable experience.

The main trail, the Falls Lake Trail, passes through several recreational areas and state parkland. When you take the path, you are in the middle of the vast lake, just before the hunting season ends. From hiking and biking trails to hiking trails and trails for kayaking and canoeing, Waterfall Lake offers a variety of opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing and other outdoor activities.

There are many other short hiking trails that offer beautiful views and special experiences throughout the park area. For mountain bikers, the Falls Lake Trail, a 2.5 km single trail, is available on the single trail. There are also many short hiking trails to circumnavigate the lake, such as the Waterfall Lake Loop Trail. If you've already sweated well, nothing is as refreshing as a dip in the cool water, so jump in and enjoy!

Grab a beach towel and get ready for a bit of fun in the sun, but comfort and enjoyment is the goal. The roll sandling offers a variety of changing facilities, such as a hot tub, showers and even a swimming pool.
