About Yankee Lake

Yankee Lake has a rich and colorful history that has survived and made it one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City. Yankee Lake is located on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain in the Hudson Valley of New Jersey, USA. The shores of Yankee Lake are occupied by a number of other lakes, such as Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Lake Huron, as well as the Great Lakes of Canada and the Gulf of Mexico. The hotel is located at an altitude of approximately 2,500 feet above sea level, at the mouth of the Hudson River near the city of Rochester, New Hampshire, USA.

Yankee Lake was a great home for the Iroquois, as it had a rich wildlife that could be used for hunting in a densely wooded area.

The Indians found numerous artifacts in the area and, after defeating the local tribes and conquering their land, they moved to the Yankee Lake area in search of food and water.

Legend has it that a Yankee named Ellsworth kept his location secret and hunted and fished in the area until the 1800s. Dutch hunting party came across Ellworth's hidden canoe and rightly suspected that it was the name of Yankee Pond, which was renamed Yankee Lake years later.

The Delaware-Hudson Canal Company was founded to transport coal from Pennsylvania to New York City. In the late 19th century, Yankee Lake was dammed to provide sufficient water for the sewer system. A small creek called Pinekill was also dammed to create a much larger Yankee Lake, which flooded a larger area, creating a petrified forest that remained in the water and weathered over the years.

In 1908, the New York Supreme Court ordered the Yankee Lake Company to lower the water level, which is still at the level it is today. When the Delaware-Hudson Canal gave up its stake in the area, it was bought by the newly formed YankeeLake Company, Inc., in 1912.

The Yankee Lake Company divided the land, built a new access road to the area, filled it with pickerls, and whoever bought the land received a stake in the Yankee Lake Company.

In 1911, the area had 3,000 inhabitants, making it one of the largest lakes in New York City. In the 1940s, a group called the Yankee Lake Association established a clubhouse as a place for teenagers to hang out, and in the age of cars, it became a popular destination for golf, swimming, fishing and other activities.

For more than a century, Yankee Lake maintained its status as one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City and the largest lake in the United States.

Boredom has never been a factor at Yankee Lake, and to ensure tranquility, motorboats are not allowed on the lake, whether in the form of a rowing boat, windsurf board, kayak, pedal boat or even a canoe. As Yankee Lake is a privately owned lake and not part of the New York State Parks System, access to the lake is limited and accessible only by boat or on foot, not by car.

Sullivan County has an excellent tourism industry, so every weekend of the year there is a new activity to try out, and there is always something new to do. Bring your family on a relaxing lakeside vacation in the Catskills, vacation rentals are available on Yankee Lake, or you can take a flying or gliding lesson. Just a short drive from YankeeLake, you can visit a one-year-old trotting track, visit one of New York's most popular horse riding trails, enjoy scenic views of Lake Ontario and the Hudson River, and visit some of Sullivan County's best hiking and biking trails.
