About Oxbow Lake
Perfect views of the perfect lake are the most common way to describe it in upstate New York. Other lakes may be larger than the estimated 140 acres of Oxbow, but none is as clean and few are more picturesque.
The state of New York named Spring Oxbow Lake after the cleanest lake in the Adirondack region. The northern shore is partly surrounded by the Jessup River and wild forest, and part of the western part of the lake is wetland, but the only development is on the southern shore, which guarantees the owners a wooded area.
Oxbow Lake is a sports lake, but most visitors believe that it is only a quarter of a mile wide at its widest point. Waterskiing and rubber dinghies are possible, but would probably be more comfortable in larger waters. The narrow lake is more suitable for canoeing and kayaking, and gasoline engines are allowed.
The south shore is sandy, providing an ideal beach for swimming, and a small resort allows visitors and anglers fee-paying access. Most visitors will be satisfied if they paddle for a few hours on this beautiful lake by canoe, kayak, boat or even by boat.
The lake is an excellent fishing area for whitefish and pickerle, especially on the undeveloped northern shore, but it is also home to perch, bluefish, perch and sunfish. Most visitors come to Oxbow Lake for fishing, and this picture will end perfectly with a perfect day at Ox bow Lake.
The lake is relatively shallow and a dream for ice fishermen, and many apartments are available for rent for up to four people, so anglers can visit the lake to practice the hard water sports of ice fishing.
Perches are the preferred prey for hard-boiled athletes, although several other species are suitable for catching. A New York fishing license is required, and fisheries regulations must be followed, as well as permits from the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEC).
The Oxbow Lake area is full of sights and sounds of the Adirondacks, and birdwatching is especially popular. Ospreys are often hunted in and around the lake, so a good pair of binoculars is a must. The nearby Northville - Lake Placid Trail, which winds along the shores of Oxbows Lake and the nearby Lake St. John River, offers a variety of wildlife viewing opportunities, with birdwatching particularly popular in the early morning and late evening hours. There are several hiking trails, such as the Ochsenbugseeweg and the See-zum-See-Weg, as well as a number of hiking trails on the north shore.
Oxbow Lake is the perfect place for outdoor activities throughout the season, and the village of Speculator offers a number of groomed snowmobile trails as well as a variety of hiking trails. Hiking maps are available online or through the local speculator company; hiking in these areas is very popular in the summer months due to the proximity of the lake to Lake Placid and Lake St. John.
The Adirondack Park offers a variety of outdoor activities in and around Oxbow Lake and its surroundings. The park also offers a number of hiking trails and snowmobile trails, as well as an extensive network of snowmobile paths.
In winter, a nearby ski resort offers downhill skiing and snowboarding, and Oxbow Lake has a variety of restaurants, ranging from casual to formal. There are a number of hotels in the area, some of which are located on the lake itself, others in the area.
Several artists and craftsmen have studios in the area, and desired daily services can be found on site. In the surrounding area there are a number of art galleries as well as a variety of shops, restaurants, shops and cafés.
Oxbow Lake offers a number of family-run motels and hotels, as well as a variety of restaurants, bars and shops.
Oxbow Lake has properties for those who want to own their own property on the lake itself as well as other properties off the coast. Most offer access to the lake itself and often include camping, fishing, boating, kayaking and rowing boats as part of the rental. While some are on the lake, there are others on the shore in the area. There are a number of state-run campsites and a variety of private campsites in and around the park.
