About Manasquan Reservoir

The Manasquan Reservoir is located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and artifacts found in the reservoir indicate that the land was once occupied by Lenape Indians. The Manasqueans came from the Lenapes as "Stream Squaw," or "Squaw People" from the US state of New York.

The New Jersey Water Board operates the 720-acre lake, and water from the Manasquan River is pumped into the reservoir to maintain drinking water supplies to the city of Monmouth County and the state of New York, as well as water supplies to the Port of Newark and other communities in the area. Man as a water treatment plant, water pump and storage facility for drinking and irrigation water is being completed at Lake Manasqueana with a capacity of 1.5 million gallons per day.

Boat trips in and around the man are a good idea, as petrol-powered boats are not allowed. The water is calm and peaceful and boaters can spend lazy afternoons on the calm lake. This great lake may have some of the best views of New Jersey and New York City, but not as many as the larger lakes.

Rowing boats and kayaks can be rented at the visitor centre, and public boat ramps are available. The visitor centre offers boat trips around the reservoir at weekends and kayaking and canoeing on weekdays.

Visitors can learn more about the wildlife that makes the reservoir home, such as birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Do not forget to use binoculars to better observe the other birds that live on the shores of this lake.

The Manasquan Reservoir Park is a great place for hiking and nature watching, and there is even a trail for horse riding on the south side of the park. The path is relatively flat and offers picturesque views of this reservoir, making it a popular destination for families.

There are numerous opportunities for photography, and nature lovers have even reported having photographed bald eagles along the way. Visitors can also walk over a footbridge to the wetlands, overlooking the Manasquan Reservoir and the New Jersey coast and river.

The Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center offers many family-oriented weekend activities, including wildlife movies and scavenger hunts. Interactive exhibits give visitors a deeper understanding of the wildlife that surrounds them in the park.
