About Needwood Lake

Lake Needwood is located just outside Rockville, Maryland and is enclosed in Rock Creek Regional Park and offers many hiking trails to enjoy and fish in the summer months. Both the lake itself and the neighboring Lake Frank offer a variety of activities such as fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, boating, hiking and much more.

Rock Creek Regional Park offers over 1,800 acres built for recreational activities to nature lovers who just step out of their homes. Lake Needwood was built in 1965, when an earth dam was built along the creek and Lake Frank followed two years later. Both lakes were built to protect against flooding and capture sediment from runoff rainwater.

The dam has been repaired and strengthened and is closely monitored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). In 2010, water levels rose by 20 metres, prompting an emergency evacuation of many downstream residents. The evacuation raised fears that the dam could give way if there was too much rain.

Lake Frank is accessible via one of the hiking trails, and Needwood Lake attracts more visitors than Lake Frank due to its proximity to Maryland State Park.

While there is no swimming on the lake, Lake Needwood offers boat rentals and concessions that sell bait and offer pontoon tours around the picturesque small lake. Private boats can be launched on the conifer forest lake without permission, but the general rule is that no boats over 16 feet in length are allowed. Battery powered boats and pedal boats are against the rules, petrol engines are not allowed and boats up to 16 feet in length may only be in the water for a maximum of 30 minutes per day, with stopovers not longer than 10 minutes.

Similar restrictions apply to sailboats, and anchor licenses can be purchased seasonally, but not longer than 30 minutes per day.

Although boats and sailing are not allowed, Lake Frank is a popular spot for fishing and trout are caught annually. The lake is home to a variety of fish species as well as a large number of birds and birds of prey. Water fowl also enjoy this lake and are always a pleasure to watch ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, ducks and ducks of all sizes.

The Rock Creek Hiking and Biking Trail starts at Lake Needwood and stretches for 20 miles to Washington, DC. The Meadowside Nature Center is a short walk from Lake Frank and a few miles from the lake. This makes it a great destination for city dwellers who want to escape the city and hike, cycle and walk.

Visitors can visit the Rock Creek hiking and biking trail, Meadowside Nature Center and Lake Frank Trail.

The Curiosity Corner Discovery Room contains games, books, puzzles and live animals that allow children to explore nature in a child-friendly environment. At the center of the Legacy Land exhibition, curious visitors can crawl into a cave and see the world from the perspective of a fish. Everyone has the opportunity to learn about the heritage of the exhibition "People," and there are natural history programmes for families, schools and youth groups.

Lake Needwood is a shallow reservoir estimated to average 1.5 meters, but is regularly dredged and drained to dredge up the accumulated sediment and improve the water depth for fishing and boating. Dredging stopped in the mid-1990s due to the construction of a new dam on Lake Frank, and the lake has since been drained again, this time to dredge up accumulated sediments and improve water depth for fishing, boating and other purposes.

The lake is closed to visitors, but will be reopened in summer 2012 and will be closed to visitors on 1 July 2012 for the first time in its history. Both Lake Needwood and Lake Frank are welcomed by residents of Rockville and Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, as well as visitors from around the world. The area, located just a few miles south of Washington D.C., is growing fast and green spaces are becoming less accessible. Rock County, MD: Both Rockville and Gaitherburg are cities with a rich historical past and feature a number of historic buildings, including the National Mall, the Capitol and the White House.

There are a number of accommodations directly across from Lake Needwood and Lake Frank, some of which are available for short-term stays, such as an overnight stay or a long week-end accommodation.

The Rockville / Gaithersburg area is a logical choice for a short-term stay where children can drain excess energy on the lake and lakeside during the summer months. Washington, DC is an excellent destination for guided tours of Lake Needwood and Lake Frank, but Washington has some of the most expensive accommodations in this country. To save on hotel costs, travel to Washington DC for an overnight stay or a long week - with the end result at one of these hotels.

A visit to Lake Needwood should be on your list of desirable activities when visiting the area. Bring your pipe and bait, wet your line, bring a concession to the lake to sell, and walk around Lake Frankensee and get to know the people of Rockville and Gaithersburg and Lake Frank. Some of the properties in this area are so expensive that prices can be quite high, but they are worth the investment.

The beautiful little lake can be visited by boat, canoe, kayak, paddle boat or even on a boat trip on the lake itself, with a great view of the city.

Although there are no current statistics for the coniferous forest, these statistics only refer to Lake Franconia and will be more complete as they become more detailed and complete.
