About Petit Lac Des Allema

Lac Des Allemands is located in Louisiana, USA, about 25 miles west of New Orleans, Louisiana. The name of the lake is French for "lake of the Germans" and refers to the early settlers who inhabited the area around the Mississippi Delta. Lac DesAllemand is located in the southernmost part of the Pontchartrain Basin of Louisiana, about 25 kilometers east of the Mississippi River. It is the largest freshwater lake in North America and the second largest in America.

Lac Des Allemands is fed by numerous bajous (Barataria basins), including Grand Bayou and BayOU Chevreuil, and the municipality of DesAllemand is located southeast of the lake. The basin is crisscrossed by inland waterways, the "Baratarie Waterways," which include the Pontchartrain River and its tributaries, as well as the Mississippi, Lake Charles and Lake St. Charles.

A large part of the basin is below sea level and measures about 400 meters below the surface. Lac Des Allemands is bordered by the Mississippi and its tributaries, the Pontchartrain River, Lake Charles and Lake St. Charles, and the Louisiana River.

Water from the lake flows into Bayou Des Allemands, a tributary of Lake Charles and Lake St. Charles, and into the Mississippi.

During Hurricane Ike in September 2008, all the water in Lac Des Allemand, which is located on the banks of the Bayou des Allemsands, was flooded. Currently, the Bayu has no flood defences, pumps or weirs, but it has access to Lac Charles and Pontchartrain and other waterways in the basin.

The maze of bayus channels and cypress swamps provides habitat for a large number of cress species - traps that are needed to feed fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and other animals. The Davis Pond Diversion Project, a 57-mile hurricane levee attached to the Bayou Des Allemands and Bayu des Allmsands levees, is being conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (LADNR). It diverts fresh water from the Mississippi into the upper part of the Barataria basin, but is not directly connected to Lac Des Allenders. Lacdes Allemenands is an important source of water for the basin management, fishing and hunting.

In 1975, Governor Edwin Edwards declared Des Allands the world capital of whales, and anglers usually catch blue whales weighing 30-60 pounds.

The canal east of Lac Des Allemands produced a record 6 pounds of mixed crappie on July 1, 2010, with a catch of 6,000 pounds.

The fishing camps are located on the shore of the lake, and a small number of fishing camps in the area hold fishing tournaments.

The Des Allemands community hosts the Louisiana Catfish Festival every other weekend in July. Take time to explore the flora and fauna of the Louisiana Mississippi Delta, and especially the Lac des Allsands.

The swamp boat offers tours of the cypress and tupelo wetlands, and the bayus are lined with cypresses.

The area is open all year round, but summer temperatures range from the high 90s to the low 70s and winter temperatures from the low to mid 80s.

Winter temperatures range from the high 60s to the low 40s, with the exception of a few days in the mid to high 70s in the winter months.

The Spillway, operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, has become a popular recreational area. The community has two jetties and is currently being built to build a new bridge over the Mississippi that will allow it to flow and pass through New Orleans.

Located in a tranquil wetland west of New Orleans, Lac Des Allemands is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Louisiana. Leisure and cultural activities in the area include fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing and other recreational activities. Parks include Lac DesAllemand National Wildlife Refuge and Lac des Allemsands State Park.
