About Melvern Reservoir

Melvern Lake is the perfect place to spend a week in the arid southeast Kansas lakeside for a day trip or a week there. Built in 1972 as a flood retention basin, Lake Melverner offers visitors plenty of outdoor fun. First opened to the public in 1975 by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), it offers the fun that everyone can only wish for.

USACE operates five campsites, the sixth in Eisenhower State Park and the third in the Melvern Lake Recreation Area (MPRA).

Melvern Lake, located 30 miles east of Emporia, is one of the most scenic lakes in Kansas and a popular destination for hiking, camping, fishing and picnicking. The scenic lake views and proximity to the Missouri River offer many opportunities to enjoy the fresh air.

The USACE does a great job of providing comfort and enjoyment to all users, including wildlife, and the lake and its surroundings have become an increasingly popular place to bring mountain bikes and cameras, providing great habitat for waterfowl and water lovers. The Melvern Wildlife Sanctuary also offers protected habitat and is open to hunting, as are the surrounding public areas.
This makes it an ideal destination for weekend visitors to enjoy the beach, fishing and pier for a small daily fee.

The reservoir is surrounded by an irregular coastline of over 100 miles, surrounded by several bays and arms at a variety of depths and habitats. There are still calm waters that remain for sailboats and anglers, as well as a number of small lakes and ponds for fishing and hunting.

Campers can bring their own boats and go fishing to their hearts "content or have them start at the boat ramp of their campsite.
Other boat ramps in other parks are suitable for smaller boats, and the concession harbor is located on the west side of the lake, right next to the main entrance to the park. Here boaters will find a boatgas repair dock, which includes a full service boatrepair shop and a small boat parking space for small boats.

Melvern Lake is home to a variety of fish, but it is best to fish on the east side of the lake, as it is bordered by the Missouri River and the Kansas River. The catches available are white mouthfish, bluefish, whale-eye, redfish, whitefish and even some small mouthfish.

No Kansas fishing license is required, but Creel limits are set to maintain a balanced aquatic ecosystem. Fishermen are warned to clean their boats before leaving Lake Melvern as zebra mussels are known to have invaded the reservoir. The marina even has a heated fishing pier, which helps less active anglers to practice their favorite sport all year round.

Each of the six campsites has a variety of amenities, and some offer more electrified pitches than others. Tents and lodgings are usually available for $5 per person, $10 per day or $20 per week for a family of four.

The Sundance campsite has only non-electric pitches, and the Outlet Park near the dam is popular with day visitors. Most campsites have a variety of amenities such as picnic tables, picnic benches, a picnic area and a swimming pool. The lake is one of the best swimming spots and there is a 90 hectare fishing lake that does not allow gas engines.

In summer, Eisenhower Park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, cycling, camping and fishing. Eisenhower State Park has a number of nature and educational trails, and there is a bike path here. The five-star cycle path, also called the Ike Trail, is of great importance for cyclists. It runs five kilometres through trees, gorges and prairies in the park. The park starts at the Eisenhower Trailhead, a 5.5-kilometer trail from the lake to the trailhead.

The Jones Aquatic Center offers water slides and a small water park, and there is an 18-hole golf course to the south of the city. The nearby town of Emporia offers a variety of accommodation, including a hotel with a pool, a spa, an indoor / outdoor pool and several restaurants and bars.

The city even supports a small zoo, and Emporia has behaved well in the past, with a good number of restaurants, bars, shops, restaurants and hotels.

Other apartments in the area, such as one, two, three, four and even four-bedroom apartments, are not always available.

Not far from Lake Melverne, Topeka offers a number of interesting activities, and the Military History Museum Holley offers some interesting exhibits for military history enthusiasts, as well as the Great Overland Station. The Kansas Expo Center offers a variety of special events throughout the year, including the annual Kansas State Fair, Kansas Science and Technology Expo and many other events. Large interstate train station with great views of Kansas City, Kansas and other parts of the state.

Topeka Performing Arts Center hosts a wide variety of shows, plays and concerts, and there are even some after-school performances. The Kansas Museum of Natural History and Kansas State Museum have a good selection of art exhibitions and concerts.

Those who want to visit Lake Melverner must choose their preferred location and spend some time outdoors. You must bring hiking boots, hiking boots, good hiking trousers and a bottle of water or water.
