Kanopolis Lake is an artificial reservoir in Ellsworth, Kansas, and is the main purpose of Kanopolis Park, the largest public park in Kansas State. The lake is surrounded by a dam built between 1940 and 1948 on the Smoke Hill River, making it one of the oldest lakes in our state.

Under normal conditions, the lake has a coastline of 41 miles, and the main purpose of this lake is as a public park, Kanopolis Park, one of the largest public parks in the state of Kansas. Built under the Flood Control Act of 1938 by the US Army Corps of Engineers, it is still maintained by its original owner, the Kansas Department of Natural Resources.

To this end, there are six recreational areas around the lake; four are maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, and the other two are part of Kanopolis State Park. Since its establishment in 1938, the park has been managed and maintained as a public park under the Flood Protection Act of 1938. Kanopolis State Park is actually one of the first Kansas parks owned by a state, with its original owner, the Kansas Department of Natural Resources.

Recreation plays an important role in Canopolis Lake; entire parts of the lake are reserved for fishing and three public jetties are available. The Corps and the state make it easy for everyone to access the water, but please check with local authorities as some sections are part of a wildlife sanctuary and sometimes closed to the public.

The Wildlife Refuge at Kanopolis Lake is one of the places where the largest number of fish species in the United States lives, with more than 1,000 species in its waters. These species include catfish, catfish, wiper-kratos and other species that attract thousands of fishermen every year. Even easier to find are the small fish such as bluefish, perch, trout, snapper, whale, redfish and whitefish, which occur throughout the lake.

Hunting is permitted during the seasons with the permission of the Kansas Department of Natural Resources and the Kanopolis Lake Wildlife Refuge Management District.

Kanopolis Lake is carved from the nearby Dakota Sandstone Bluffs and around the lake there are numerous caves to explore, many of which are hiking trails. If you are ready to roam the caves, climb the steep walls to remind yourself what a fascinating cave this is.

Ellsworth County also has a great deal of history and is worth a visit if you have time, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Kanopolis Lake is a busy lake for water sports and Kansas has certainly forgotten its share. The water is beautiful on a hot summer day and there is room for everyone, and KanopolisLake is the most frequented lake in the water for sports.

Swimming is a great way to cool off, cool off and spend time with your children, and the beach is well maintained with picnic and camping sites that need to be kept civilised.
