About Lake Springfield

The reservoir was built by the City of Water, Light and Energy as part of its water supply system for the city of Springfield, Illinois.

As an additional product, it has become an important recreational center in central Illinois with an annual attendance of more than 1.5 million people.

On the lakeside, visitors will find a swimming area that makes access to Springfield Lake easy and plentiful. Many visitors enjoy a variety of leisure activities such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing and rowing boats, as well as swimming.

Note: Over 15 different sport fish species have been caught here over the years, but some anglers struggle to find the perfect spot. Some of the fish that have arrived at Lake Springfield are flatfish - catfish, perch, perch, bluefin, whitefish and redfish.

The city's water, light and electricity also reserve land for two wildlife areas. The Lick Creek Wildlife Preserve is the largest wildlife reserve in Illinois and the second largest in the United States after Lake Michigan.

The wildlife reserve is about 12 hectares in size and serves as a footbridge that allows access to the park from the lake. Along the trails of the reserve, visitors can enjoy a variety of bird species, reptiles, amphibians, birds of prey and other wildlife.

The houses are privately built and owned by tenants, but the land belongs to the cities water, light and electricity and the houses are privately built.

Springfield Illinois has been the state's capital since 1837 and is home to the Illinois State Capitol, the State House and a number of other buildings.

Among the city's many historic sites is the only house Lincoln ever owned, which is now a national park. Other attractions include a replica of the depot where Lincoln left Washington, DC, from where he went to Washington DC and Lincoln National Cemetery.
