Carlyle Lake, 50 miles east of St. Louis, is located in southern-central Illinois and has a population of about 2,000 people and an average annual rainfall of 1.5 million cubic feet. Lake Carlyle, founded in 1958 and 1967 by the Army Corps of Engineers, is 4.8 kilometers (4.6 miles) high and 800 meters (1,640 feet) deep.

With 26,000 hectares of land still providing flood protection for the surrounding region, it has become a popular destination for those who love boating, fishing and other outdoor activities. Carlyle Lake offers history buffs many interesting treats, such as Great Lakes National Park and Illinois State Park.

The first humans settled in the region about 10,000 years ago, and today the Kaskia Indians, one of the oldest tribes in the United States, are native to the region. The Indians built their settlement along the Kaskaskingia River as a natural ford to carry out their daily activities. European settlers arrived in the region in 1812, building forts and lock houses to protect themselves from the American population. They named the area after the lake, Carlyle Lake, after their home state of Illinois.

Carlyle Lake is a pleasure for anglers and offers over 30 species of fish, including bluefish, whitefish, redfish, black perch and white trout. The lake has been a favorite of anglers for many years, with a variety of species, such as white, blue, brown, yellow and redfish.

Grab a fishing rod and bait box and ask one of the friendly local fishermen where you can go fishing. Renting a boat on the lake is easy and you can enjoy a nice day on a lake while waiting to reap the profits. Hunters can enjoy the attractions of Carlyle Lake because wildlife is widespread and hunting is a popular pastime. Eldon Hazlet State Park hosts a controlled pheasant hunt from November to January. The Department of Natural Resources also sanctions hunting of mourning pigeons, white-tailed deer and black bears, which offers opportunities for almost any hunt.

When you have your next meal, head to Carlyle Lake, as sailors call it, and when summer comes and goes, sailboat fans flock to the lake. In fact, the winds at the reservoir are good and almost every weekend in summer exciting regattas take place. It was the site of the 1994 US Olympic competition and the 2008 US Olympic Games.

If you just want to vacation, Carlyle Lake is just right for you, it has everything you need and more. The shore is lined with campsites, campsites, restaurants, shops, hotels and a variety of other amenities. There is a common coastline with the lake and its neighboring lake, Lake Michigan, so you are tempted to try one of these, but make sure you make it part of your trip to the Great Lakes region of the United States.
