About West Point Lake

West Point Lake, located in the Chattahoochee Valley in Georgia, about 30 miles south of Atlanta, stretches for 35 miles along the Chattanooga River. The popular resort offers a variety of activities, from fishing to boat trips, kayaking, canoeing, swimming and fishing. Leisure activities at West Point Lake include fishing, boating, hiking, camping, picnicking, golfing and other outdoor activities.

West Point Lake was built by seizing the Chattahoochee River and approved by the Flood Control Act in 1962. Construction of West Point Dam began in 1963 with the help of a $1.5 million grant from the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Completed in 1975, West Point Lake Dam provides flood protection for the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries in the Atlanta area.

The lake level at West Point Lake varies between 1,000 feet and 2,500 feet above sea level, with a maximum depth of 4,200 feet. Fishing is best in the summer months, from June to October and from November to December.

West Point Lake is a lake with a high predator population where perch, catfish, cappies and bream can be caught. Anglers should contact the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division for more information.

When water is released from the dam, the fish in West Point Lake become active due to the current generated by hydropower. The best time to fish is when the turbines are running, although fish can be caught at any time.

At the top of West Point Lake is the Georgia Wildlife Management Area (GWMA), Georgia's largest wildlife management area. This area is open to the public for hunting and observing wildlife and it is allowed in certain corps - managed areas. To hunt at West Point Lake, you must obtain a stamp from the Georgia Wildlife Management Area.

In addition to fishing and hunting, visitors to West Point Lake can enjoy a variety of activities. Surrounded by pine forests and rolling fields, the leisure facilities, which include a golf course, swimming pool, picnic area and picnic areas, offer a wide range of outdoor activities for adults and children, as well as outdoor recreation.
