About Lake Cypress
Cypress Lake, the largest lake in Kissimmee Waterway and the second largest in Florida, is a popular vacation destination in central Florida. Okeechobee is connected to many of the lakes along the KissimMee River by canal locks. In this Kissin 'Waterway, boaters can travel from one lake to another, enjoying 56 miles of water, including Cypresses Lake.
Cypress Lake, the second largest lake on the Kissimmee Waterway and the third largest in Florida, is located in a flat, full-bodied lake chain on the east side of the river.
The Kissimmee River winds for more than 100 km and supplies a population of about 1.5 million people with a total annual production of more than 2 million gallons of water. The US Army Corps of Engineers transformed the river in the 1950s into a straighter, 56-mile canal to control periodic river flooding.
Although the wastewater project achieved its flood control goals, most of the wetland was destroyed and the wintering waterfowl population of over 1,000 bird species disappeared.
The Kissimmee River Restoration Project is being carried out to restore the wetland - a rich floodplain - which is scheduled to be completed in 2020. The project, jointly managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), will restore more than 1,000 hectares of wetlands, wetlands and floodplains along the river. The upper and lower parts of the canal have been preserved to maintain flood defences, but the aim is to restore the sensitive wetlands and ecosystems.
A trip to Cypress Lake is more than just a relaxing exercise or a full-day activity, it is a great place to get back to nature. Add your photos to our Cypresses Lake Florida Facebook page for more photos and information about the park and its activities.
The diverse wildlife of central Florida is an outdoor playground that will impress the whole family. Winter birds choose the vast area around Cypress Lake, with bald eagles flying through the air, red-shouldered falcons making occasional graceful visits and beautiful herons known to make an appearance. Wildlife photographers can enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna of Cypresses Lake Florida with the help of the Florida Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Florida Parks and Wildlife.
Water sports are popular at Cypress Lake, where airboat rides are the price of one of the most enjoyable trips. Airships take you on a unique tour of the diverse ecosystem around the lake, and some even travel to the nearby swamps to get a glimpse of fantastic wildlife.
Cypress Lake is known for its excellent fishing, and you will probably find stonechats, bluethroats and whitefish around the lake.
Rent a boat, bring your own or throw a fishing rod and sit back and wait for your next big trophy catch. After a day of fishing, a trip to this lake is hardly complete, but it is worth it to enjoy.
Cypress Lake is famous for its fiery orange sunsets, which are deeply colorful and are among the most spectacular I have ever seen. Enjoy a sumptuous meal and a glass of wine while watching the sunset over the still waters of the lake. While you wait, the sun on your face and the warm breeze in your hair will help you to truly understand what "away from everything" really means. Just play in the water, swim, snorkel, paddle in a kayak or canoe or just swim in a lake with your friends.
