About Lake Crescent
Crescent Lake stretches across Putnam and Flagler Counties in northeast Florida and covers an impressive 15,960 acres. The lake is known for its picturesque views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Keys and hosts many visitors from around the world who seek peace and quiet at Crescent Lake. A public boat ramp on the west bank provides access to the lake, but it is best to arrive early as there is limited parking for vehicles, boats and trailers.
In addition to water storage and wildlife protection, it serves as a buffer between the lake and the Gulf of Mexico and as an important water source for the Florida Keys.
Bald eagles, ospreys and waterfowl can be found here, as well as a variety of birds of prey such as sea lions, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, goblins, peregrine falcons, owls and other birds.
The Haw Creek Preserve Nature Reserve offers many recreational activities, including hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, boating, swimming, fishing and kayaking. Fishing is probably the most popular activity on Crescent Lake, but due to its above-average salinity, the lake is home to the coveted blue crayfish. Blue crabs are a must for avid anglers and the harvest is anything but lean, with an average harvest of 1,000 crabs per year.
In addition to the pinching crustaceans, Crescent Lake is also home to perches, crabs, catfish and panfish. These fish are prize fish, and if you throw your fishing rod into the surrounding sparkling water, you will already feel like a winner. Wildlife photographers can't get enough of Crescent Lake and its beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Keys.
The old cypresses line the banks and offer ideal seating for the local bald eagles. Ospreys stand on their huge nests, shouting warnings if you get too close or slide in the water while they think you are swimming with them. They even jump on your head, so that you don't even splash around in the water, which is rare in a lake.
Kayaks, canoes and bass boats are all you normally see, even if fan boats do occasionally appear. Boat trips are popular, but you have to be careful as the depth is generally 5-10 feet, but not too deep.
Although the lake is beautiful from the shore, nothing compares to how it feels when surrounded from all sides. When the golden sun warms your skin, close your eyes and let the sounds and sensations of nature capture your senses.
Boaters can enjoy a scenic 5-mile drive along the creek, which is rich in wildlife, and Crescent Lake flows into the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the St. Johns River.
After a day of lakeside activities, you can head to Crescent City at the West End, but that's how relaxation really feels. The city is populated by private homes, motels, campsites and restaurants and is one of the state's most popular tourist destinations.
The entertainment usually takes the form of interesting conversations and hearty meals, but don't underestimate the opportunity to watch an incredible sunset over Crescent Lake while sipping your favorite wine. Crescent City also hosts the annual Catfish Festival on the first weekend in April. Enjoy great food, music and crafts and enjoy great views of the lake from the West End and city centre.
