About Lake Granby
Lake Granby is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, just a few miles north of Denver, and is a great place for a mountain holiday. The lake has something for everyone and is an ideal destination for hiking, camping, fishing and even a bit of camping.
Lake Granby, built in 1949 after the completion of the Gran by Dam, is a catchment area on the Colorado River. The lake is the second largest in the United States and the third largest in Colorado, after Lake Colorado.
Lake and reservoir are connected by canals, and water can be pumped from one to the other depending on irrigation requirements. Together, the lake, pumping stations and tunnels form part of the Colorado Big Thompson Project, which includes the Alva B. Adam Tunnel, which transports water from the continental shelf to Lake Granby and the Gran by Dam.
The project, whose primary objectives are irrigation and electricity generation, is managed by the Office of Reprocessing of the Ministry of the Interior.
The land around Lake Granby, which was founded in 1978, is located in the Arapaho National Recreation Area and is often referred to collectively as the Great Lakes of Colorado. In total, there are 2.2 million km2 of land in this area, which is home to about 1,000,500 people. In addition to Lake Gran by, the Arapahoe National Recreational Area includes Rocky Mountain National Park and Shadow Mountain State Park, as well as a number of other national parks.
Visitors to the Arapaho National Recreation Area can see waterfowl and go hunting large and small game. There are hiking trails and there are snowmobiles and cross-country skiing, as there are specially prepared areas for snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skiing.
On the northeast shore of Lake Granby there are also campsites for overnight stays, boats and tents. Lake Granby is a popular destination for cruising in motor boats or sailboats, and visitors can enjoy water skiing and windsurfing.
Lake Granby borders Rocky Mountain National Park and its ice is strong enough to fish on the ice. Inaugurated in 1915 by Woodrow Wilson, it is the nation's tenth national park. Fishermen can catch Valais, salmon, trout and other fish species as well as other fish.
In winter, visitors can wear snowshoes to see the wildlife and in early summer, wildflower walkers put on a show. The landscape is unique and is home to the Rocky Mountain National Park, but it also hosts the world's largest collection of wildflowers with more than 1,000 species.
The town of Granby has a rich ranching heritage and experienced a small gold rush in 1879. Visitors to Lake Gran by can explore the history of the region and learn more about its history and the history of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Lake Granby is one of Colorado's Great Lakes, and there's one taking place on weekends. There are also several other lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as a number of smaller lakes and rivers.
