About Pearl Lake

The name and location of Pearl Lake speak for its hunting history as a hunting ground and it is the scene of the West in America. It reflects the overgrown hills and is home to the largest lake in the western United States with a population of about 2,000 people.

The name "Pearl Lake" is a combination of "Pearl" and "Lake," the two most common names for water in Colorado. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was one of Wyoming's most famous hunting grounds, and today it is a popular hunting and fishing area for hunters, fishermen and hikers alike.

At the beginning of the 19th century, trappers and miners opened the West to settlers who discovered wealth in sheep and cattle breeding. The glittering streams of Pearl Lake and its surroundings offered the Ute people a summer house, while the wooded areas offered good hunting grounds.

John K. Hartt, a rancher, raised his sheep and cattle in Pearl Lake in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His large sheep farm stretched from the Colorado border to the Mexico border, where he is said to have survived the war as a cattle and sheep breeder.

In the early 20th century, he settled in what later became Pearl Lake and built an earthen dam to contain the melting snow that flowed from Farwell Mountain and Lester Creek.

The resulting reservoir is now one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in the United States, and the water flows into the Elk River, where the ranch's land continues to thrive. Pearl Lake, managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, is also known as Lester Creek Reservoir and is used exclusively for recreation and fishing. In the southwest corner of PearlLake, the bottom of a dam named after M. "Pearl" Hartt remains from the construction of its drain.

Today, Pearl Lake, which covers 167 hectares, is the largest freshwater reservoir in the USA and the second largest in Colorado. It is said that it is an excellent place to catch gold medal-winning trout and grayling that can be stocked in its waters. To preserve the peaceful solitude of Pearl Lake, only waxless gas and electric boats are allowed. Fishermen and boaters will find a public ramp on the west bank of Pearl Lake and a private ramp on the east bank.

A visitor only needs a small boat, a boat ramp and a little time on the water, but not much more. Along the west bank, there is also a private boat parking area where visitors can relax and enjoy the view of Pearl Lake, reflected on Farwell Mountain.

Swimming is allowed on the beautiful beach, which is bordered by a stream, a river and a small stream with a few small streams and streams.

Surrounded by 166 hectares of unspoilt countryside, Pearl Lake is the perfect place for game and bird watching. Two yurts are available, one of which is wheelchair accessible, and the campsite has a 14 x 14 inch tent floor. Basic equipment includes hydrant and toilet, as well as campfire, fireplace, picnic table and picnic table.

With an average snowfall limit of 300 cm, it is not surprising that all roads and facilities at Pearl Lake are closed in winter. Leisure activities include mountain lakes with well-developed shipping routes and trails, as well as a variety of hiking and mountain biking trails. Hunting is permitted with state approval and is managed by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife (DNR) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFWS).

Steamboat Lake State Park offers a well-developed campsite with a variety of hiking and mountain biking trails and a wide range of camping options. There is a 1.5 km trail from the lake to the Steamboat Creek Trailhead and a 2 km trail along the Coulton Creek Trail.
