We fish grass a LOT in Florida and the Stick Marsh has its share, too. At times, we find it difficult to get bass along the outer edges of the grass and we have to go into it.
Soft plastics, when rigged Texas-style (weedless), are ideal for this application. However, the lure drops down into the grass and gets snagged up a lot. That is just one of the hazards we have to put up with in this fishing approach.
Well, Old Fishing Tipster, your friendly Weedend Semi-Pro and National Backlash Pickin' Champion, found something that really helps when approaching that grass. We found that the skinny profile of a plastic worm sank into the grass significantly. BUT, switching to a flat, wide-bodied plastic lizard really made a difference.
Rigging the hook under the wide part of the lizard body made the lizard sink with the wide part down, greatly increasing the resistance to the water and slowing the sink rate. The leg projections also helped with this. But, the best part was that the wider profile of the lizard body and legs would allow the lure to lay on the grass, rather than sinking down through it. This made the lure much easier to fish and precluded snagging. We also found the bass would take the lure right off the grass while it was lying still.
